Primary Grade Reporting

There is some interest among PK - 2 teachers to move to a nine weeks reporting schedule. They are concerned that the current procedure of waiting 12 weeks at the beginning of the year is too long to go without formal reports to parents and that 6 weeks is really too short a time to observe significant growth, or the lack thereof in the littlest of our students.

So the question becomes, "Do we move to a nine weeks reporting schedule for grades PK - 2 or not? "

The primary teachers on my campus are in agreement with moving to 9 weeks. They typically send a progress report home at this point, and they feel that moving to a 9 weeks grading period would facilitate better communication with less redundancy.

Charlotte Anderson would like to see the primary grading periods change to 9 week intervals for the entire year instead of the current way we do it. The primary teachers already notify parents about the progress of their child prior to the 12 week report card. Additionally, the assessment of primary students is lengthy and time consuming and going from 6 week grading periods to 9 week grading periods would allow more instrucitonal time and thus allow any proposed intervention(s) time to work.

The teachers at Smith Elementary welcome the idea of moving to nine weeks. Parents also embrace the idea so they can assist students early on.

Teachers at Tarver-Rendon also agree that a 9-week grading period would be more appropriate.

Our faculty K-2 was excited about the 9 weeks report periods. However 3 2nd grade teachers had mixed feelings. They didn't like the idea of older siblings receiving cards at different times. The others feel that they won't be spending so much time assessing and can focus more instruction time on teaching the concepts.

The K-2 teachers were thrilled with the possibility of having 9 week grading periods. The only concern was having students on the same campus receiving report cards at different times. Could we consider 3rd and 4th grade doing this also? Since their grades are available on line parents might not need to see cards as frequently.

The teachers at D. P. Morris like the every 9 weeks report card idea, but most importantly they would like to see this in all grades K - 4. The first report card would coincide with the parent/teacher day in October. Teachers felt that if Kinder through 2nd was every 9 weeks and 3rd and 4th was every 6 weeks there would be too much confusion. Just having an additional three weeks to chart progress can make a real difference for some students. The majority of teachers believe this is a good idea.

The majority of K - 2 teachers at D. P. Morris like the idea of report cards every 9 weeks. The additional three weeks make a difference for those students who receive intensive intervention and need time to demonstrate mastery of the skills that have been taught. If the district chooses to move K - 2 to every 9 weeks, they felt that 3rd and 4th grade should be on the same schedule to avoid confusion.
